Shakespeare Said it Best

"Give thy thoughts no tongue, nor any unproportioned thought his act.  Be thou familiar, but by no means vulgar.  The friends thou hast, and their adoption tried, grapple them to thy soul with hoops of steel; but do not dull thy palm with entertainment of each new-hatched, unfledged comrade.  Beware of entrance to a quarrel: but, being in, bear't that the opposed may beware of thee.  Give every man thine ear, but few thy voice:  Take each man's censure, but reserve thy judgment.  Costly thy habit as thy purse can buy, but not expressed in fancy; rich, not gaudy: for the apparel oft proclaims the man;...neither a borrower or a lender be: for loan oft loses both itself and friend, and borrowing dulls the edge of husbandry.  This above all: to thine own self be true, and it must follow, as the night the day, thou canst not then be false to any man."
-Polonius in Hamlet

Fantastic advice from not as fantastic of a character in the play. We're reading the play and watching the 1996 version of the movie in my History of Creativity class.

Missing Clothes and World Domination

So I was running late to my class this morning, and after throwing on my shoes, grabbing my bag and neglecting my cereal, I whipped out the front door.  I got halfway to the JKB and for some reason I kept thinking “man, I feel so free today!  My shirt is so soft.”  I looked down and it took a full 30 seconds to register that I had forgotten to put on one vital item of clothing today... my bra!  I spent the rest of my two hour class period crossing my arms and adjusting my shirt, hoping the wrinkles and folds would work like camouflage. I think it was success!

In my 2-Dimensional Design class, my first assignment was to create a negative space drawing which we were supposed to ink as well.  I was so excited…I’ve been minoring in Visual Arts for only about four days now, and I have a whole piece of artwork to prove it!  Mine was not a masterpiece by any stretch of the imagination and the critiques I got from classmates were all really “constructive” (one of those words lawyers use to make something sound better than it is) but I was proud of myself because, for my first art class since 7th grade, I think it looks dandy.  Mike wants me to hang it in our apartment… Maybe the bathroom.

The best part is that my teacher is so chill.  He’s in his mid 20’s and just seems relaxed about all of our assignments thus far.  We’ve even had fudge and doughnuts on two separate occasions.  Even though I spent 4 hours last night and stayed up til 2am inking my picture, I’m inclined to actually be excited about art.  We watched this movie called “Helvetica” about the font, which was actually pretty cool.  Do you know we see it every day, and so many companies still use the same font for their logos?  Kinda insane that I’m so excited about this Utopian font.  But while I think it’s the Golden Mean of language to revolutionize the world of industry, others believe it’s as communistic and dangerous as Wal-Mart or Google.
